Amazon updates its FBA prep requirements regularly, and what worked last year might get your shipment rejected today. Here's what you need to know for 2025.
Labeling Requirements
Every unit sent to FBA needs a scannable barcode — either the manufacturer barcode (UPC/EAN) or an Amazon FNSKU label. For commingled inventory, you can use the manufacturer barcode. For everything else, FNSKU is required.
Key rules:
- Labels must be scannable — no wrinkles, smudges, or partial coverage
- Place labels on flat surfaces, not on seams or curves
- Cover any existing barcodes that aren't the one Amazon should scan
Packaging Standards
- Polybagging — required for items with openings, textiles, and anything that could be damaged by dust
- Bubble wrap — fragile items need at least 2 inches of cushioning on all sides
- Suffocation warnings — required on all polybags with a 5-inch or larger opening
- Sets and bundles — must be clearly labeled "Sold as Set — Do Not Separate"
Box Requirements
- Maximum weight: 50 lbs per box
- Use new, sturdy boxes — no crushed or reused boxes
- Only one shipment ID per box
- No excess packing material — Amazon charges for oversized boxes
Common Rejection Reasons
- Unscannable barcodes
- Missing suffocation warnings on polybags
- Items not properly prepped (no bubble wrap on glass, etc.)
- Wrong item counts vs. shipment plan
- Expired products or missing expiration date labels
The Easy Way
Let your 3PL handle prep. A good FBA prep service knows Amazon's requirements inside and out, updates their processes when rules change, and takes the compliance burden off your plate entirely.
